The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in partnership with the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP), is conducting a workshop on machine learning for official statistics in Asia-Pacific countries from 3–7 February 2025. The event is being hosted by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) through Politeknik Statistika STIS (Polstat STIS), which serves as the Secretariat for the Regional Hub on Big Data and Data Science for Asia and the Pacific.
The workshop, bringing together representatives from statistical offices across the region, was formally opened on 3 February by Pudji Ismartini, Acting Deputy Chief Statistician for Methodology and Statistical Information at BPS. “This workshop provides a vital platform for participants to develop key skills in machine learning and its application to official statistics,” she remarked. She further noted that the initiative aims to tackle the challenges of integrating both traditional and non-traditional data sources to enhance the production of high-quality, timely, and reliable statistics—crucial for monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The opening session was attended by representatives from the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office (UNRCO), UNSD, and UNSIAP. Delegates have travelled from Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Turkey, Timor-Leste, Malaysia, and Indonesia, with the latter also represented by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK) and the Forum of Higher Education in Statistics.
