Strengthening Vital Statistics: A Key Step Towards OECD Accession

In pursuit of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the demand for high-quality, accessible statistical data has never been more critical. As Indonesia advances its National Statistical System (SSN) under Law No. 16 of 1997, there is a concerted effort to enhance administrative data alongside traditional census and survey data.

To develop robust indicators from population and health administrative data, BPS-Statistics Indonesia is collaborating with the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), and the Ministry of Health. Together, they are working on the Indonesian Vital Statistics System (SSHI), a project supported by Presidential Regulation No. 39 of 2019 on One Data Indonesia and No. 62 of 2019 on the National Strategy for Accelerating Population Administration for Vital Statistics Development.

A transparent and reliable SSN is not only crucial for accurate social and economic data but also for Indonesia's bid to join the OECD. This commitment was showcased during the High-Level Meeting of Collaborative on Administrative Data held at The Westin Jakarta on July 25. The event, titled "Unlocking the Potential of Data Empowerment through Data Sharing: Supporting Indonesia's Accession to OECD," highlighted Indonesia's progress towards this goal.

Acting Chief Statistician of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, led the discussion, featuring speakers from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, BKKBN, the Ministry of Health, and the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Kemendagri). "Integrating administrative data with other sources to enrich Vital Statistics is not just for BPS's benefit but for our collective progress towards One Data Indonesia and supporting our OECD accession aspirations," Amalia stated.

This collaborative effort began with a Capacity Building event from July 22-24, focusing on enhancing the use of administrative data for official statistics. The series will conclude with a Capacity Building session on Statistical Population Register for BPS on July 26. This initiative is a joint endeavor with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) under the Collaborative on Administrative Data (CAD), and the Statistics Norway.
