Violence against women and children remains a critical challenge for Indonesia's efforts in promoting women’s empowerment and child protection. To better understand the scope of this issue, the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA), in partnership with Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Demographic Institute at the University of Indonesia (FEB UI), the Social Welfare Polytechnic (Poltekesos) Bandung, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), recently released findings from the National Women’s Life Experience Survey (SPHPN) and the National Survey on Children and Adolescents’ Life Experiences (SNPHAR). The data was presented at an event in Jakarta on October 7.
The launch was attended by BPS Deputy Chief Statistician for Social Statistics Ateng Hartono, representatives from the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), UNFPA, FEB UI’s Demographic Institute, and Poltekesos Bandung.
KemenPPPA commended BPS for its ongoing support throughout the survey process. The 2024 survey results reveal a decline in the prevalence of violence against women and children compared to data from 2016 and 2018, signaling positive impacts from recent government and community initiatives.
Speaking at the event, Ateng emphasized BPS’s role as a strategic partner in the surveys, noting contributions to methodology design, the development of a Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) application, a dashboard for data visualization, and technical support. "BPS has been involved with SPHPN and SNPHAR since 2016, and we hope these survey results will prove beneficial for everyone," he remarked.
