The 8th Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics Congress: BPS Takes a Leading Role

Imam Machdi, the Deputy Chief Statistician for Methodology and Statistical Information at BPS and Acting Principal Secretary, conveyed his opening remark at the "8th Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics Congress" in Bilbao, Spain, on June 10.

The event, organized by the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics, was supported by the Government of Spain, the Basque Country Regional Government, and the Basque Centre for Climate Change in Bilbao. This year's theme was "Informing Climate Change and Sustainable Development with Integrated Data."

BPS's significant involvement in this congress underscores its role as part of the Global Hub, with the Regional Hub for Asia Pacific inaugurated in Jakarta in 2023. This designation positions BPS as a center of excellence for leveraging new data sources for official statistics.

The event also saw the attendance of Moh Edy Mahmud, Deputy Chief Statistician for National Accounts and Statistical Analysis at BPS, along with other BPS officials. The conference spotlighted critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity, sustainable tourism, and more.
