APCAS: Need for Statistical Data for the Advancement of Agricultural Systems and Food Security

Bali - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO) today opened the 28th session of the Asia-Pacific Commission on Agricultural Statistics (APCAS) in Bali, Indonesia (10/02). The session will take place on 10-14 February and is guided by the Government of Indonesia through the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Ministry of Agriculture. The session was attended by 100 delegates from 30 countries and 9 organizations both international and regional.

The meeting will focus on the need for food and agriculture statistical data in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the biennial meeting of the statistician and agricultural expert will also review and support the region's readiness to produce adequate statistics to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets by 2030.

"In 2030 there will be 17 goals, 169 targets and 232 indicators to monitor the progress of the SDGs. This is a very heavy task. With less than 15 years left and nearly half a billion starving people still struggling to survive in the Asia-Pacific region, we must strengthen partnerships between governments, international organizations and the private sector to meet this data need, "said Stephen Rudgard, FAO Representative for Indonesia.

"Cooperation between FAO and the government, including BPS and the Ministry of Agriculture along with other relevant Ministries / Institutions, is urgently needed. Quality agricultural statistics that are accurate, timely, and relevant, are important to supply the needs of SDGs. The best exchange of knowledge and experience through APCAS meetings like this is a way to improve, improve, and accelerate the development of agricultural statistics to monitor the achievement of SDGs in the Asia Pacific region, "BPS Head Suhariyanto said at the opening of APCAS.
