Abstract

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in March 2011 was 126.05 or deflated 0.32 percent from February 2011 at 126.46. In March 2011, the changes of each expenditure group as follows: the foodstuff decreased from 150.14 to 147.22 or deflated 1.94 percent; the prepared food, beverages, cigarette and tobacco increased from 133.86 to 134.29 or inflated 0.32 percent; the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel increased from 120.85 to 121.20 or inflated 0.29 percent; the clothing increased from 126.85 to 127.33 or inflated 0.38 percent; the health increased from 117.21 to 117.65 or inflated 0.38 percent; the education, recreation and sport increased from 118.51 to 118.71 or inflated 0.17 percent, and the transportation, communication and financial services increased from 106.59 to 106.68 or inflated 0.08 percent.

The deflation in March 2011 was mainly caused by price decreases of several commodities, i.e.: red chili, rice, small chili, shallot, purebred chicken meat, green chili, tomato (vegetable), sugar, and passenger plane fare. Meanwhile, the prices of the following commodities were increased, i.e.: purebred chicken eggs, garlic, gold accessories, instant noodle, tofu, fermented soybean cake, orange, mineral water, clove-flavored cigarette, filter cigarette, brick, leasing house fee, rental house fee, wages of labor, housemaid cost, academy/university tuition fees, and gasoline.

In March 2011, the core of CPI changed from 121.24 to 121.54 or inflated 0.25 percent (see Table 2). The administered price component changed from 120.03 to 120.28 or inflated 0.21 percent and the volatile component changed from 153.60 to 150.10 or deflated 2.28 percent.

The core inflation rate of calendar 2011 and year on year (March 2011 to March 2010) were 1.06 percent and 4.45 percent respectively. While inflation rate of the administered price component of calendar 2011 and year on year were 0.79 percent and 5.48 percent respectively. Furthermore, inflation rate of the volatile component of calendar 2011 and year on year were -0.39 percent and 15.17 percent.
