Abstract

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2010 was 122.67 or inflated 0.76 percent from July 2010 at 121.74. In August 2010, the changes of each expenditure group as follows: the foodstuff increased from 141.17 to 141.83 or inflated 0.47 percent; the prepared food, beverages, cigarette and tobacco increased from 129.32 to 130.19 or inflated 0.67 percent; the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel increased from 116.66 to 118.51 or inflated 1.59 percent; the clothing increased from 120.80 to 120.87 or inflated 0.06 percent; the health increased from 114.73 to 115.04 or inflated 0.27 percent; the education, recreation and sport increased from 115.40 to 116.86 or inflated 1.27 percent, and the transportation, communication and financial services increased from 105.46 to 105.84 or inflated 0.36 percent.

The inflation in August 2010 was mainly caused by price increases of several commodities, i.e.: electricity tariff, rice, fresh fish, passenger plane fare, purebred chicken meat, elementary school education fees (SD), secondary school education fees (SLTA), beef, small chili, cooking oil, cooked rice & side dishes served together, rental house fee, secondary school education fees (SLTP), noodle, spinach, potato, papaya, banana, ketupat/lontong sayur, cooked noodle, sugar, clove-flavored cigarette, filter cigarette and leasing house fee. Meanwhile, the prices of the following commodities were decreased, i.e.: red chili, shallot, tomato (vegetable), gold accessories, cabbage, mustard greens, carrot, garlic and gasoline.

In August 2010, the core of CPI changed from 117.72 to 118.33 or inflated 0.52 percent (see Table 2). The administered price component changed from 116.10 to 118.53 or inflated 2.09 percent and the volatile component changed from 143.82 to 144.47 or inflated 0.45 percent.

The core inflation rate of calendar 2010 and year on year (August 2010 to August 2009) were 2.60 percent and 4.24 percent respectively. While inflation rate of the administered price component of calendar 2010 and year on year were 4.68 percent and 5.71 percent respectively. Furthermore, inflation rate of the volatile component of calendar 2010 and year on year were 12.88 percent and 15.09 percent.
