Study of Automatic Identification System (AIS) Data Utilisation

The publication of the Study of Automatic Identification System Data Utilisation is a publication of the first series of studies related to the utilization of AIS data published by Statistics Indonesia (BPS). This publication is the initial series of efforts to the use of big data as supporting data for official statistics. One emerging source of big data is AIS, a traffic system originally designed to prevent ship collisions during navigation. AIS messages transmitted by ships around the world are big data due to their high volume, speed, and variety of information. This publication presents an explanation of AIS data, data acquisition, data processing, and case studies on the use of AIS data in several countries.
